For my final emerging technology for education web 200, I decided I wanted to incorporate screen capture and online recording into my assignment. I did not know a lot about the topic before hand that is why I chose it.
The website that I chose to learn about this topic is called jingproject. It is the first on the list from our wiki page. Even though I had little background on my topic of interest, Jing gave great descriptions of what this software could be used for in the future. The Jing software is powered by TechSmith. In this software one can create their own instructional message, picture, or video and send it to their friend online. A good example used on the website, is say you and your friend want to meet up for lunch, but he does not know where the restaurant is located. You can Jing the directions that you get from say MapQuest, and send it in a link to him with the exact information that your friend would need to get to the place. If you are like me, and are bad with directions and are a visual kind of person, than Jing is perfect software to use for things like directions or instructions. It can be uploaded to most computers, and even your cell phones.
I would like to incorporate Jing software into my classrooms so I can post different lectures or slideshows that I feel would be influential for my students or friends. I made my Jing from a YouTube video that I found. Now, I want to warn you the video is cropped from a George Carlin HBO scene, and it is a little confrontational. He uses some strong language, but I felt that his message was important, and that it would be cool to upload.
The website gives a great tutorial on how to set up, use, and download the program to your computer. After you follow the simple tutorial, you’re ready to explore the internet and find cool things that you can crop and send to your friends or associates. After you find your topic all you have to do is crop it, save it, and upload it to your screenshot account. From there on you can download your crop, so that others can view it on screenshot. Screenshot is a seperate account that is a partner with Jing. Screenshot also gives a simple tutorial to watch so one can learn how to download their Jing crops to the cite.
In the end, Jing is a fast and simple program to use when you need some quick directions or if you find something cool on the web and you want to share it with others. Below I will post my Jing crop of the video I found of George Carlin, I hope you enjoy, and finish the rest of his speech.

Emerging Technology #2

For my second emerging techonology I found an interesting webstite that could incorporate how to use pictures in techonolgy. The site is called Roxio and the program that they have is called photoshow.

Photoshow is a fast and extremelly easy way that people can upload pictures that they have on their hardrives to a slideshow system that can create fun and creative shows. The program is really easy to use, and I think that it would be a great way to upload pictures so you can use them in an interactive way like in a classroom or maybe creating a presentation of reasearch photos.

Some of the cool tools that the program has is one can create; different boarders, captions, quotes, add stickers, or even add music to each individual slide. I actually think think that this would be an ideal program to make up a slideshow at maybe someones funeral. As sad as that sounds, I believe I have seen this program used and made into a DVD so it could be shown at funeral showings. I mean it is pretty ideal for this, but I know there are dozens of other uses that this program could be used for too.

In the future I think that Roxio photoshow could be used in my classroom to create a slideshow of pictures that I have gained throughout the years from visiting different things in the world. Some of these things could be like historical artifacts and monuments so that the students can get a better look at the important monuments other than the pictures the book supplies.

All in all, if you are having a tough time creating or uploading your photoshow here is a website that will take you to multiple of helpful tutorials. But, I am sure that you will be able to figure it out, because I am a dope in technology, and I figured it out easily. And below I have added my own photoshow with some uploads of friends and family, so enjoy.

Using RSS feeds

After checking out some of the posts from my web feed on google, there was actually some pretty cool stuff that I found. I really liked the one feed that was talking about 'Skinput', where a person can use their own body to give their computer electronic messages and commands. Also, I learned that within the different feeds there are blog posts and comments directly from educators. They just state their opinions and wether or not they liked whats going on with certain plans in their educational field. All in all, I found that many of the posts are kind of broad, but most are interesting. I think that I would use this more often if I knew about it in the past. It pretty much just takes all the important information that comes out of my favorite sites and puts them all on this google reader. Expectations were high coming in, but now I am completely satisfied with how this system is set and functions.

Podcasting made easy and educational for the viewer by Chris Linn. While trying to create my podcast I ran into a couple of road blocks. Even after watching the tutorial on how to make a podcast I found that it was still difficult, probably because I am not the best with technology, but hopefully with some of the websites that I give will be helpful so anyone can create their own podcast.
A podcast is a series of media files that are released and then downloaded through web syndication. Web syndication is a form of uploading that takes website material and then makes it accessible to other sites. Podcastings main purpose is to upload a video or audio excerpt that has a main theme or message to send to the receiver.
Podcasts are helpful in many ways, but for this blog post let’s specifically talk about how it is beneficial for educational purposes. Say a student is absent for a day of class and they missed an important lecture. With podcast technology a teacher can record him or herself and upload that video by podcasting it to a host cites. An educator can use a podcast to upload book talks, international pen pals, music performances, interviews, or debates.
For my personal testimony of the technology, like I said above I thought it was kind of tough to get the program running and upload my recordings. It was not very frustrating downloading the different applications so I could run the system, but after I got them all up it was hard to get them all to run together. I just couldn't figure out how after I recorded my excerpt how to make it into a RSS feed and then post it to blogger. I am going to mess with it a little more, because I think it is a pretty interesting piece of techonology and it would also be beneficial in the future to use this technology.I think that I could use podcasting to upload a stream of videos or music for my students to access from their home. I know that many schools have limitations on what can be shown in class, but with podcast I could upload the films for extra credit and then the students could write an analysis on it.
Some tips to getting started with making a podcast, I suggest that you watch some tutorials that people have made on YouTube. I will post the links to the different YouTube videos at the bottom of this blog post. One of the sites that I thought was pretty user friendly was the audacity cited. It downloaded fairly quickly, and it was actually pretty fun to mess around and use all of the different tools that the program entails. Also, another site that gives a good example of what a podcast actually is EPNweb.org. This cite gives a ton of examples of different podcasts for different educational purposes.
